Can you believe it isOctober already?!? My last fortnight has been heaps busy that it didn't register that christmas is only 2 mere months away! it doesn't feel like that long ago i was munching away on Easter eggs.....
Anyway, October is good food month (hurray!) which means i have legit excuses to eat! It is only the first week of October but i have done so much eating already! i visited the Quay restaurant ( post to come), had a fair few food gatherings and meet up with friends and of course this amazing Flavours of the Philippines lunch buffet @ Shangri La Sydney! ( i think i may have consumed enough calories to feed a village of people this week! eek!)
At the entrance to Cafe Mix.
Thanks to Christine of Cooking Crusade, i was able to experience some amazing food! I have never had filipino food before and as Flick of Flick Your Food said, "it has this amazing unique flavour that you have to experience for yourself." and boy was she right! the food was aromatic, flavoursome and definitely unique! it was definitely a fantastic experience!
Did you know that the place mat is actually the daily headlines of Manila Times? Love the little touches they put in! Thang from a Spoonful of Goodness has such sharp eyes!
So first up was the cold foods. there was a great selection, with a range of salads, pickled veges, seafood and protein. Everything looked amazing!
All the salad had such scrumptious names, i definitely had eyes bigger than stomach-itis that day! i wanted to have second helping of everything! my fav was definitely the kang kong w/ chilli!
And knowing me, i checked out the dessert ( didn't take any yet!) before i even looked at the hot foods. ( well, i would argue it was on the way....) this is the Buko Pandan (Young coconut with pandan- jelly) and the mixed fruit salad with cream and coconut milk.
Look at all this! wahhhhh
Ube Halaya (Purple yam pudding)
This was a favourite of mine, sticky, chewy and so yummy! i may of had a few pieces.... oops!
Leche flan- filo creme caramel! omgsh this was amazingly smooth. I'm not normally a fan of creme caramel because of a strong eggy taste, but this had none of that eggy taste. delicious!!
Ok Ok..... back to the savoury first!
Amazing selection of hot foods.
There was an amazing selection of hot foods! i didn't know where to start!
Ihaw-Ihaw (Lamb rump) and beef ribs
I loved the lamb! it was cooked to perfection and so tender!
lechon (roast piggy!)
there was like a magnet between me and this dish, i gravitated back to this dish every single time i got out of my chair! the crackling was amazingly thin and crispy. Mmmmm shards of crispy goodness. i will not disclose how much of this i had!
Pancit palabok (Rice noodle with smoked fish and shrimp sauce), Duck Calderata (Duck stew in mildly spiced tomato sauce) and Estofadong Dila (Slow cooked ox tongue in tomato sauce)
i also sampled a bit of everything else, i really liked the ox tongue, the slow cooking made it melt in your mouth, pillowy soft goodness!
Steamed fish with coriander
The fish was amazingly delicious too, so flavoursome and cooked to perfection. i'm not normally a fan of steamed fish as we have it at home almost every day.
(Sisig) Twice cooked pork belly station.
this chef was so adorable! can i take him home pls? i think i can eat twice cooked pork belly every day!
My first plate.
My second plate- the cold selections.
I sampled a bit of everything, everything and i mean every single thing was amazing! that custard meringue roll was amazing!
Halo Halo station
taro ice cream @ halo halo station
My personalised halo halo.
i was so full by this stage i didn't want to move but the halo halo station HAD to be checked out, i swear it was calling out my name!
There was also a selection of fresh fruits and a chocolate fountain. and you guessed it right, i had some fruit ( its healthy!) and chocolate of course! a fantastic end to a lovely meal!
It was definitely a fantastic experience and i got to meet some fantastic people. Shout out to Flick and Thang, it was great to finally meet you guys! can't wait for more food adventure together!
I can't wait to explore more of this amazing cuisine, or perhaps a trip to the Philippines is on the agenda? who knows? ;)
